For some time now it has looked like we are marching to an uncharted future brought on by advanced technology. But now we find that even today’s basic social order is turning upside down. Was the stability of Western society (at least) always an illusion? Here, we will discuss how social reality is a reflection of the way our minds are constructed. The web of social activity is simply a larger version of the web of thought that is the basis for each of our minds. These webs have identifiable qualities, including informational integration, native tension, forced disruptions, random exploration, multiple “selves” in conflict, and more. We will look how the real resolution to our social issues is through understanding this self-construction. Through increased self-awareness we can learn why we respond the way we do, and how to make those responses more adaptive and productive.
